How to Keep Your Smile in Tip-Top Shape this Thanksgiving

Posted .

Many don’t realize this, but Thanksgiving can be a scary and dangerous holiday for your smile. That is why it’s very important to keep your oral health in mind and take care of your teeth and gums throughout the day. To help you keep your smile in tip-top shape this Thanksgiving, our Algiers Dental Associates team encourages you to do the following things:

-Don’t snack all day: Usually, there are many treats and snacks laying out on the table before and after Thanksgiving dinner. If this is the case for your family, it’s best to avoid snacking throughout the day. Snacking can harm your smile because it doesn’t give your teeth the chance they need to rejuvenate and build the strength to fight harmful food particles at the next meal.

-Be careful with dessert: Sugar is an enemy to the smile, which is why it’s best to limit your sugar consumption. However, if you do decide to eat or drink a sugary product, make sure to rinse the harmful particles away by drinking a glass of water afterward. You can also rinse your mouth if you feel it’s necessary.

-Brush your teeth: It’s important to brush your teeth after you are done eating. This will help you clean the harmful food particles away from your teeth and gums. As you brush, make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. However, if you ate or drank something that was acidic, please wait 30 minutes before brushing.

-Wear a mouthguard: For many people, it’s tradition to play a game of football before or after Thanksgiving dinner. If this is the tradition for your family, then please protect your smile with a mouthguard. Wearing a mouthguard can help you protect your teeth when hard, forceful objects hit them.
